These quotes are absolutely priceless! From the book of Elvis by the Presleys, page 51, Lisa Marie Presley recalls: “That same Christmas we went sledding. It was icy and I was a little nervous. So my father pulled my sled along rather than letting me take off on my own. Then he gets on a sled, lays flat on his stomach, and aims for the steepest part of the driveway.

A guitar is a more amicable instrument than any other string instruments. Once a person masters few basics he/ she will be able to create tunes and notes out of it. However it might take a year or two for a very passionate player to master the basics itself. The learner will also have to exploit the instrument to its fullest capacity to learn the basics.

Many of us who have taught from the violin scale book by Carl Flesch have wished for a “Cliff Notes” version — one that includes the familiar fingerings but without all the extra material, such as octaves, tenths, and parallel thirds. Of course, these have their place. But most students could benefit from a more simple (and portable) version. Simply Violin: Violin Scales and Arpeggios in One, Two, and Octaves (Based on Flesch) offers a viable alternative to the Flesch book that I can recommend to teachers who are looking for a more user-friendly version of Flesch. And, the book contains scales in one and two octaves, allowing for students of any level to begin scales and progress to Flesch fingerings in a logical and progressive way.

I recently acquired a copy of Simply Violin: Sing. Play. Learn. Favorite Songs For Violin in First Position to use with my beginning students and, so far, I have found it quite useful. I have been teaching violin and viola for nearly 30 years and am always looking for new ways to inspire and teach my students. This book contains 80 familiar songs arranged in order of increasing difficulty. I believe it could be a strong supplement or even competitor for Suzuki Violin Method: Book One.

Giovanni Lamperti and his father Francesco carried on the illustrious banner of the “old Italian School” of voice training through the 19th century. While the method was perhaps uncomfortably short on scientific analysis for a modern, industrial world (unlike the rising, competing method of the Garcias), it was long on histories of success spanning from the great castrati of the 17th century to the many successful students and teachers that emerged from the Lamperti studios.

The foundations of the bel canto method and style were laid during the creation of opera and monody solo singing in the late 16th century. As the new art form developed, virtuoso singers emerged on the international scene with almost inhuman agility, range and beauty. Mostly castrati, but also including all voice types, these highly trained singers became the first rock stars of the world, with influence, incomes and lifestyles to match.

The cost of this product is a wee bit higher. The seriousness and passion the creator, Craig, has is reflected in making sure that his student understand fully the concept of scaling, and eliminate the myths about playing the guitar – and turning into a rock star. The cost of this product is higher as compared to the competitor, and the method this is being taught is a little unconventional by teaching it by One-string Scale, Two String Scale… Ear Training… and then finally applying all. This may get the student a little bored and lose motivation along the way, since the end result is, well at the end only. This explains why its mentioned that, this product is only for those who are truly interested in mastering the skills, rather than merely knowing how to play the guitar.

I hate taking drugs. I know that’s hard to hear coming from a full time working musician. But it is true. I hate taking anti-histamines or sprays. I prefer the holistic approach.

The three ways to protect your voice:

1. Water: Distilled water is the best. Chlorinated water, even when filtered is the worst. Why? Think about how your skin feels after you’ve been swimming. Chlorine does the same thing to vocal cords – dries them out.

If you can not find steam distilled water, Wal-Marts have water filtered by reverse osmosis. It’s a charcoal based filtering system that has no bacteria. Spring water is no good for that reason. You don’t know what spring it came from, so you don’t what organisms are still there.

2. Sleep: Hard to get enough sleep. If you’re like me, you go, go, go. So 8 hours is tough. What I do is I make sure I take a nap before every gig. Even if I lay down for an hour it helps. The voice is never more relaxed then when at sleep.

3. ALOE DRINK by KHEE BROS. This stuff is the best! (No I don’t get a commission form them.) I just tell you it works!

Ingredients: Pure water, aloe gel, fructose, honey, citric acid, calcium lactate, vitamin C, aloe fruit.

I usually find this drink at an Asian market. We have a great Chinatown in Chicago where I live. But check any of your local yellow pages or google them. It comes in a green plastic bottle. It actually real refreshing — not like the aloe extract you get at the nature stores. It has helped immensely in healing my voice after a couple nights of gigging.

Aloe Vera is a miracle plant. If you don’t know about it, you need to read up on it. It hydrates and it also helps allergies!! fat grms, 0 trans fat grms, 0 sugar ( it does have honey in it ), 11mg sodium, 0 Cholesterol, 15gms of Carbohydrates.

This simple plant ginger is not only a wonderful tasting spice that gives vibrancy and pungency to any meal but it also contains many wonderful healing properties that have been revered by the great ancient civilisations of India and China for over 5,000 years. Today one of the big ginger producers is Jamaica and and India. The rhizomes (the bulbous root) are the location where all the wonderful healing properties of the plant are stored. I am just going to explain briefly about a couple of the kinds of properties that ginger is blessed with. The first one is the essential oil that is extracted through a method of distillation from the plant. Ginger is made up of the following essential oils properties alpha-cadinene, alfa-farnesene. beta bisolobene, beta-bisabolol, beta phellandrene, beta pinene, camphene, limonene, alfa cadinol, citral, citronellal. I know that these names may not mean much to you but on a molecular level it means that they have different properties that are naturally synergistically combined to give ginger extremely powerful and potent healing abilities that include:

analgesic, anti-inflammatories, antiseptic, expectorant, anti-viral and many others.

In addition to all of the above ginger also contains proteins and minerals amongst which are aluminium, magnesium, phrosphorus and zinc. Being an aromatherapist I often use ginger essential oil in various blends for digestive conditions, sickness and aching muscles. (But did you know that using the fresh ginger root is just as therapeutic as using the essential oil?) Fresh ginger is full of wonderful healing properties that can help with many illnesses including helping to prevent heart conditions. One of the most common uses of ginger is in combating motion sickness. More recent studies have also explained its potency in tackling inflammation and pain. One active ingredient in this important role is – gingerols – that act on a specific sensory receptor called the vanilloid receptor. This receptor sits on the pain sensory nerve endings (this is where the body submits nerve impulses from to tell our brain that we are feeling pain). The vanilloid receptor reacts to heat and acidity and this is how the active molecular structure of ginger reacts with these receptors to block pain.

Recent investigations into how best use of ginger as an anti-inflammatory pain killer has come up with some of the following ways:

Drinking it as a tea throughout regular intervals during the day. Making a compress to apply to the injured area and repeating this therapy every 6 hours

This makes ginger an extremely useful and inexpensive treatment that can be used for tennis elbow suffers and other tendonitis and arthritic conditions to effectively reduce inflammation and pain. In other words ginger can be used as part of a tennis elbow treatment program along with other natural healing techniques.

A race of hunters and gatherers, the Baka Pygmies, found in Cameroon, live together with various ethnic groups of Bantu farmers, with whom they exchange goods.

With an average height of 1.5 metres, the Baka are, strictly speaking, pygmoids rather than pygmies. Nevertheless, in everyday usage, the term “pygmy” is employed.

The exact numbers is difficult to determine, as a semi-nomadic group, they roam the rain-forest taking up temporal residence in specific areas that offers rich games and natural resources, but estimates range from 5,000 to 28,000 individuals.

They occupy forest ecology and they exploit the gifts of nature or the ecosystem. Over the years important exchange relations have developed between the hunter-gatherer Baka and the neighbouring Bantu cultivators. However, this relation has been one of tolerance and characterized by hostility. The situation has been caused by the condescending attitude and derogatory comments with which the Bantu describe their Pygmy neighbours, looking upon the Baka as goods belonging to them, they are victims of racism and exploited in plantations as cheap labour.

One of the most important differences between the Baka pygmies and their Bantu associates is the fact that they owe their total existence to the natural resources which nature has endowed on their habitat, the rain forest.

Like other pygmies the Baka are culturally, linguistically and physically different from their Bantu neighbours.

They live in huts they call mongulu which are one-family houses made of branches and leaves and nearly always built by the women. After a frame of very flexible, thin branches is prepared, recently-gathered leaves are fit in the structure. After the work is complete, other vegetable materials is sometimes added to the dome in order to make the structure more compact and waterproof. Besides the mongulus the Baka also build rectangular huts made of leaves or bark, just like the other ethnic groups do, only they use mud and wood.

The Baka, know the variety of forest foods, animals and the specific seasons when these products can easily be found. Of the different seasons which these pygmy people experience each year, the three-month period of prolonged heavy rain is the most important. During this period when the forest is in its abundance the Baka leave their permanent villages for the deep forest and for several months roam gathering food. The men perform the more prestigious but undoubtedly more hazardous job of supplying meat for the group through hunting and trapping. The women carry possessions in baskets and follow their husbands.

Types of hunting performed in the rainforest are with bows, poisoned arrows, crossbows, spears and traps. Contrary to what occurs in other pygmy cultures, the Baka do not know the use of hunting nets. The forest animals killed are a various species of primates, artiodactyls, rodents, etc, which are hunted at night. They place traps near watercourses to hunt crocodile, which is usually killed by spears.

Looking for food in the forests is one of the most important activities for the survival of the group, gathering yam, fruit, mushrooms, but in some seasons of the year it’s possible for them to find small animals, such as termites and caterpillars.

Carried in baskets by the women, the products come to camp and are shared by all the families.

Hunting is one of the most important activities, not only for providing food but for the symbolic meanings and prestige traditionally attached to it. Skilled Hunters are very respected and taken into great consideration, especially if they specialize in the most rewarding and significant game activity: The Big Elephant Hunt.

Massive deforestation these days deprives the pygmies of the natural resources essential for their biological and cultural survival. Unfortunately, due to the diminishing number of prey and less frequent expeditions in the forest, today, hunting does not provide the Baka an adequate supply of animal proteins which causes serious nutritional problems especially in the children.

With inadequate diet and health problems, many live a quiet life keeping a strong cultural identity and marking the boundaries between their form of culture and that of the other ethnic groups in the forest.

Of all the aspects of nature which surrounds the Baka pygmies, they perceive the tropical rainforest as the most valuable force with which they interact.

The typical Baka pygmy will not leave his home in the forest even in exchange for an ultra modern palace in the city.

They have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the forest and its products, including the healing power of plants and are in fact, guardians of a huge natural pharmacy. Thus their whole life is occupied with the welfare of their forests.

“We are born and grew up in the forest; we do everything in the forest, gathering, hunting and fishing. Now where do they want us to make our lives? ”

Mbeh: Baka guitarist

Baka Beyond/Baka Gbine

Music has a central role in the life of the Baka. From an early age they have a keen sense of rhythm, as soon as a baby is able to clap it is encouraged to participate in all the communal music-making. There is music for ritualistic purposes, music for passing on knowledge, stories and the history of the Baka people, and music for pure enjoyment. This communal music-making constantly helps to strengthen the bonds between the individuals in the groups.

Baka Music is perhaps best described as bursts of harmonic yodeling, intertwining in a dynamic, rhythmic fashion. It is quite hypnotizing and the environmental forest setting makes the overall effect fascinating.

Inspired by the magical rhythms and melodies of the Baka people, British musicians Martin Cradick and Su Hart founded Baka Beyond in 1993 after they had visited the tribal people.

They recorded an album “Spirit of the Forest” under the name Baka Beyond which pushed them into worldwide recognition. The band has since then evolved into a multicultural, dynamic live stage show with album sales of over a quarter of a million copies.

They have played at WOMAD in the UK, USA and Czech Republic and on the Jazz Stage at Glastonbury; Musica Mondial in Sao Paulo, Brazil and many more festivals in the UK, USA, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal as well as headlining the Vancouver Folk-Roots Festival. Their tracks are often heard on TV soundtracks, particularly in nature programmes on BBC and have been nominated for the BBC Radio 3 World Music listeners awards.

Su Hart says, “It was the amazing bird-like singing that first attracted me, the women will get together before the dawn to sing, enchant the animals of the forest and ensure that the men’s hunting will be successful. Song and dance is used by the Baka for healing, for rituals, for keeping the community together and also for pure fun!”

With ongoing help from Martin and Su, they were then being invited to play at local feasts, weddings and funerals in Cameroon. After recording their album “Gati Bongo” in 2000, they decided upon the name “Baka Gbine” (Gbine translated means ‘help’).

The band includes guitarists Pelembir, Mbeh and Zow, percussionist Masekou, two women – Ybunga and Lekeweh, who bring the phenomenal singing to the concerts, and traditional music.

Giving it back to the Baka

Baka Gbine is one of the few groups who ensure that they put as much back into the culture as they take out. Royalties earned by the sale of the albums are channeled back to the Baka Pygmies through the UK based charity Global Music Exchange – or as the Baka call it, ‘One Heart’.

This ongoing relationship with the Baka community has helped them to win land rights and recognition as Cameroonian citizens, as well as the funding of their own medical centre and a Music House. These steps all help to protect the Baka’s culture, forest environment and unique hunter-gatherer way of life.

Roger Harrabin reports-

The biggest threat comes from a road into the rainforest which has been upgraded by Cameroon’s government with funds from the European Union.

The World Bank and the African Development Bank refused to finance the upgrading.

They said it would accelerate logging and the hunting of endangered species. But the EU handed out the money without making any environmental assessment.

Steve Gartland, the World Wildlife Fund’s man in Cameroon, says the inevitable is now happening.

“Road-building programs tend to bring development into the forest areas. As soon as you get the forest areas opened up you get the poachers going in, leading to depletion of wildlife and deforestation,” he said.

Sixty per cent of Cameroon’s forests are already being exploited.

Some firms wreck the forest by bribing their way round laws permitting only selected mature trees to be cut. Others appear to play by the book – felling only the occasional large tree.

Forester Jean Francois Pagot admits that the most valuable species are being depleted because they’re not being replanted.

He says: “The main reason is the long life of the trees. Some take two or three hundred years to fully mature – and no timber license lasts that long – so the diversity of the forest is being eroded.”

The Baka are finding it harder to get other sorts of meat since poachers started using the EU’s road to sell their catch from the forest reserve.

One Baka said: “They killed elephants, gorillas, chimps, panthers, buffalos, deer – all in the reserve”.

European Union (EU) taxpayers are funding wildlife conservation in this reserve as well as paying for the road which makes life easier for the poachers.

The EU is now funding anti-poaching education projects. But hunting wildlife is too profitable for some to resist. Conservationists say it is a typical problem caused by the EU’s aid program. They say aid from Brussels is often poorly administered and damaging to people at the sharp end – like the Baka.

by: Sharae Taylor

Angels in art and meditation are an alternative and spiritual healing therapy for child development.

As more and more alternative and spiritual healings are being studied and documented they are finding that all forms of upliftment heals the body, mind and spirit. Angelic art falls within this category by uplifting the spirit. I do not claim Angel paintings create physical healings. Angel paintings soothe the emotions and create a more peaceful atmosphere helping today’s society deal with the stressful world we now find ourselves in on a day to day basis.

Angel paintings are unique. They are a form of healing art. Angelic art uplifts, motivates, comforts, soothes and inspires. Each painting holds it’s own inspirational energy and you do not have to be a ” Believer” for this to work. These paintings work on a deep emotional level, clearing, releasing and comforting the emotions and melting the stress of the day away. Inspiring within each individual that gazes upon them their own God like image and this is how the healing takes place. A place of beauty and perfection is remembered by the Soul.” Divine energy is at work assisting alternative and spiritual healing through Angel therapy in the form of fine art.

My Angel paintings for example are personal, AngelsbySharae.com, whether it be in one of my collection series or for a specific individual or relationship or group. Upon completion of each painting, I know that it is indeed meant for someone and their heart and soul will instantly know and respond to the Angel and the energy before them in the painting. My Angel art is a gift, given to and through my talent by Divine Angels guidance instructed to them by a much Higher Source. The Angels oversee and instruct every brushstroke and detail of paint color and every brushstroke within each painting … they truly know “Who” the painting is for and the message it portrays. You can read more about how the paintings are created on my Sharae’s Studio page. These paintings are truly a “Living” source of Divine Energy. I have witnessed some pretty amazing emotional releasements, and reactions when people have gazed upon them and truly responded with their soul !

Each day, more and more documented proof is coming through from the medical fields proving that Art and Music are truly a recognized healing tool to be used by everyone. Whether it be in participation, gazing upon or listening … Art heals. This has always been known in the Alternative and Holistic medicines, but now is being used more and more in the traditional medicines opening up a whole new train of thought causing many, many positive results benefiting all. I look forward to it becoming an everyday occurrence … just as a standard prescription is used.

‘Healing With The Angels’, by Doreen Virtue who also authored Angel Therapy, ” teaches esoteric and practical methods that help you work with your Angels in healing your relationship, family and body issues.” Angel or Angelic art is an extension of this therapy.

Indigo and Crystal Children and the elderly respond to the Angel Paintings with a knowingness of love and illumination that comes from within them. Sometimes the reactions have been as though they are recognizing an old friend.

Children respond to Angels. I have spent many an hour introducing children to their Guardian Angels through guided visualization meditations. These meditations are a great way for children to have fun and to feel safe as never before when they actually know their own Angel. Angel paintings work in the same way when hung in their space and they know this is an image of their Angel. I have personally witnessed children who were afraid and shy most of the time become outgoing, happy kids … when they have acknowledged their Angel it seems to open a whole new world for them because they know they are safe with their Guardian Angel watching over them.

Angels are so much more than we realize. I have found them to be great teachers and an endless source of information.

The Angels are the keepers and protectors of our children and surround each and every child with their wings of love. They focus on the nuturing, love and guidance of each and every little soul … which speaks to my heart and makes it smile and I get to be called “The Angel Lady” by all these wonderful children.

Angels are so much more than messengers.

How To Promote Instrumental Music Online

Instrumental music composers often have a hard time promoting and selling their work. Popular music styles that sell the most are more geared towards musical acts with vocalists and lyrics, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a significant market for instrumental music of all types. In the new age of internet distribution, the independent instrumental composer must adopt new promotional techniques to bring their music to a larger audience.

In order to take advantage of the internet as an instrumental musician, you must have a professional website. This is not to say that you have to pay some one to build you an expensive site, it is more possible than ever to build your own high functioning web pages with free software like Wordpress. There are many other options as well, and there is a lot of information involved, so for the purposes of this article, we will leave it at that.

Your website will be your base of operations on the internet, but an effective promotional campaign of instrumental music will involve a lot more. The key is to promote your music in many different ways to draw listeners from many different sources.

One great way to get more exposure is to make music videos for your songs and put them on YouTube. YouTube is one of the most high traffic sites on the internet and there are always people looking around for new music. You do not have to pay for someone to make you a fancy video, see if you can come up with a creative way to build your own videos that showcase your instrumental music. With some free video editing software that you can find online, it should be possible.

You should also try to market your music to the general search engines by targeting a specific niche. There is a massive amount of competition for music in general on the internet, even for instrumental music specifically, but if you can get more detailed and narrow in your niche you will find a small market that is manageable. Once you have this market in mind, try to get a blog or website into a high search result for related terms.

With both your videos on YouTube and your websites, search rankings will mean a long-term consistent traffic of new people finding your music. In order to get these high rankings for targeted term
1000
s, you will want to try building links to your sites and videos with music articles that you write, posts on sites that you own, and any other type of link building you can think of. Article marketing in particular can be very effective.

The key to promoting and selling instrumental music online is to find a targeted market and promote your music to them, rather than trying to promote it to the entire internet at large. With a logical strategy and some hard work, modern musicians should be able to make an online profit with their music independently.

Stay in the moment, go with the flow, let go of attachment.

These are concepts very familiar to all yoga students and spiritual seekers. I like to think this makes us ‘now’ people, remaining in the present as best we can. Truly… being… present. Sound healing is thousands of years old, and while it has taken many forms it has consistently been about being present within sound. Sound has always been integral to spiritual transformation because it transforms your experience of the moment. As a musician, I have found that concentrating on sound is a simple and effective means to becoming comfortable with my self, regardless of the emotions I may be experiencing. Music offers solace in subtle and mysterious ways beyond any scientific or rational meaning.

In the language of yoga, the purpose or the effect of continuous nada sadhana on the mind is ananda – extreme bliss. Nada, or sound, is divided into two parts – aahada and anhada, heard and unheard. Heard means that which is possible for you to hear ‘through the physical ears’, and unheard means ‘felt’, which is the condition of nada before it is musically shaped and regularised. You know how you can feel a piece of music you really love. It gives you joy or it allows you to feel sadness or you kick out the jams. Our life force or consciousness creates the unheard but felt vibration in a way that communicates without language or cultural barriers. It is the energetic gift of music, and music created with the intention to benefit is healing.

Buddhist Sound Healing helps to open the body’s energy centers. Vocal sound can be used as an object of meditation, and listening to music can become a method of integrating the experience as a form of healing. Music can be acutely therapeutic because it activates many parts of the brain, changing its wave patterns and arousing a variety of emotions.

A recent article in the New York Times made these interesting points about the efficacy of sound in healing: “Sound and music enter the healing equation from several directions: It may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems…., it may be calming to the mind and therefore the body, it may have emotional effects which in turn help to regulate the immune system – the healer within.” Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, M.D. Dr. Gaynor distinguishes between curing and healing. To “cure” means physically to fix something, whereas “healing” refers to wholeness, a union of the mind, body and spirit. Dr. Gaynor, who has an oncology practice in Manhattan, considers sound healing integrative medicine: not an alternative to science but a complement to it.

Why use the voice? If you liberate the voice you liberate the body, mind, and spirit. The voice connects the heart and mind. Recent sound and energy research has demonstrated, through the study of human blood pressure, heart rate and brain waves, that no sound has as profound an effect upon the body as the human voice.

In Buddhist sound healing sessions we use vocal overtoning as a meditation technique, as an energetic healing technique, and in musical performance. We explore the energetic qualities of sound with many unanticipated, serendipitous moments of bliss and discovery.

It is my belief that the phenomenal growth of the yoga movement in North America over the past ten years is a reflection of our evolving consciousness. More and more beings are practicing yoga to open their bodies and heal. Buddhist sound healing is very much of the moment, a practice that speaks to the needs and yearning of yogis and yoginis everywhere. It is a practice that assists in adapting to the changing frequencies of the planet. I don’t believe this can be adequately explained or comprehended, but I know that it can be experienced.

Sound healing is the sound of now, for now people everywhere.

The world and all its beings are the container and the contained. We are an expression of light and elemental flux. Through intention we can use our minds and sound to transform our suffering and improve our quality of life. The benefit we experience is broadcast from the center of the mandala throughout space and time. We accomplish benefit for all when we intentionally heal ourselves.

Our voices enter your body with the intention to heal. The mandalas are energetic medicine created for the specific weeks in which they are released. we create fresh sounds for now people.

Padma Soundsystem sound healing uses vocal sound as an object of meditation and listening to music as a method of integrating the experience as a form of healing. Music can be acutely therapeutic because it activates many parts of the brain, changing its wave patterns and arousing a variety of emotions, according to Dale Taylor, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Taylor has spent years studying the remedial effects of music.

“Music itself is a very positive experience; it stimulates the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain,” says Taylor, the director of the university’s music therapy department.

Why use the voice?

If you liberate the voice you liberate the body, mind, and spirit. The voice connects the heart and mind.

Recent sound and energy research has shown us, through the study of human blood pressure, heart rate and brain waves, that no sound has as profound an effect upon the body as the human voice.

In Buddhist sound healing sessions, vocal overtoning is used as a meditation technique, as an energetic healing technique, and in musical performance. We explore the energetic qualities of sound with many unanticipated, serendipitous moments of bliss and discovery. This is a lot of fun!

Buddhist Sound Healing Process:

Setting Intention: We gather together a group of bright lights and help them to reveal their wondrous luminosity! Ideally we come together in a space used for spiritual practice with ‘live’ acoustics. (Hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings are nice… natural lighting or candle light is preferred.) We begin with discussing the importance of setting intention and encouraging everyone to be mindful of their personal intention in participating.

The sound wave created by a person singing or playing an instrument will carry information to the receiver of the sound.

Intentions address the following questions:

Why are we doing what we are doing?

What do we hope to achieve?

What purpose are we fulfilling?

An intention can be thought of as a goal. Other synonyms for the word “intention” include “purpose, aim, aspiration, resolve.” Clear intentions hold tremendous creative power. In the areas of personal growth, relationship, career, and live choices, clarity of intention is an indispensable tool for achieving what we envision. A clear intention focuses our energies and makes it easy for us to discern which of the choices we encounter are on track for what we want to achieve, and which ones are not.

In the absence of clear intention, our life is shaped by circumstances, by our desires and fears, and by the intentions of other people. The absence of a clear intention can affect a day at work, a weeklong vacation, or even a whole decade of our life.

Our entire life is shaped by our thoughts. We can create anything we want with the creative energy of thought. When we truly get this we understand that we are not victims, that we are empowered to create whatever it is that we want. We then begin to watch what we think. Rather than let our thoughts control us, we begin to take control of our thoughts and we begin to create intentions.

When creating an intention, it is helpful to make clear, concise statements. State your intention in the present tense in a positive way. For example, if your intention is to live coffee free you might write, “I am living coffee free.” You would not write, “I am going to stop drinking coffee.”

Connecting with conscious intention – what thoughts are pervading your body’s frequency or vibration right now? We share how intention or lack of it determines our experience of life. Setting intention will include a discussion of the Buddhist practice of mindfulness, constantly bringing the mind back to the intention to be of benefit to all beings. We will also discuss the healing power of practicing loving kindness and compassion.

Buddhist compassion is the result of knowing one is part of a greater whole and is interdependent and connected to that whole. Creating the Nada Yoga sacred circle, individuals become a spontaneous community joined by sound, with the intention to benefit each other and all beings through this practice. We suggest focusing on the following when listening to Padma Soundsystem:

Intention to remain present

Intention to heal myself with sound

Intention to benefit those I love

Intention to benefit all beings

Intention to remember who I truly am

Meditation: Loving kindness and compassion play such an important role in the Buddhist approach to spirituality that we can say that a genuine practice of the Dharma is actually based on the development of these qualities. The teachings always emphasize that, unless we practice and integrate these qualities into our everyday lives, it will be utterly impossible to attain enlightenment and liberation. Moreover, without such an integration of loving-kindness and compassion, not only are we failing to benefit others, we are actually harming them, whether directly or indirectly.

We will spend some time generating the mind of loving kindness and compassion. We will discuss awareness of the various mental states from laxity to excitation, with the ideal to maintain a calm mind somewhere in the middle. We will be using the simple to learn method of counting the breath to calm the mind and listen to the body. This meditation method is appropriate for beginners and experienced meditators alike. We will take this time to become aware of our interconnection through collective breath, the healing power of practicing together, the power of conscious intention and focusing the mind with affirmation.

The idea is to focus the mind on sound, to literally meditate on sound. Through practice one can create a peaceful mind, focusing on the sound rather than discursive thought. This becomes a healing in itself as we free our minds from repetitive thought patterns that cause suffering.

We believe that senses can be improved at all stages of life, and that enhanced sensory perception is the fruit of any spiritual journey.

Listening to Heal: We rarely take the time to consider the gift of hearing, and yet it plays such an integral part in our experience of life. Buddhist sound healing is the yoga of listening, improving how we listen to our world and ourselves. Most musicians will tell you the art of making music as a group begins with listening to each other, really listening creates a sound greater than the sum of its parts. In Nada Yoga we spend our time together working out our listening skills, in a gym for the ears. The bio-harmonic architecture is breathtaking!

During the last half of the twentieth century, Alfred A. Tomatis, a French M.D., researcher and philosopher, defined the ear as a primary organ for multiple physical, emotional and neurological development responses. Not only is the ear and its complex ability to send information to the brain and the body primary for hearing and sound perception, it establishes balance and equilibrium. It is also primary for the development of verticality, spatiality, laterality and language development.

Tomatis’s innovative research is based on the ear’s ability to discriminate between sounds it selects to hear and the ability to tune out sounds that are unwanted. The ear’s ability to listen and focus, select sounds spatially and regulate auditory information as it is perceived by the brain, has become the theme in over a hundred centers worldwide dedicated to assist children and adults with speech and communication disorders, attention deficit disorders, head injuries, and autism.

We believe these concepts help to explain the benefits of Buddhist Sound Healing, as listening and singing is a simple path to restored equilibrium and moments of sheer joy. We also believe that experiencing music helps to integrate and amplify the work we do.

We get most benefit from this practice when we focus our mind and really listen to our voice, and open our ears to the voices all around us. These are voices raised with the intention to help each other heal.

Buddhist sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to the body/mind of a person with the intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health. The dictionary defines ‘harmony’ as ‘congruity of parts to their whole or to one another’. ‘Health’ is defined as ‘the state of being bodily and mentally vigorous and free of disease’.

Yeshe Dorje is a Buddhist sound healer who leads the Tucson based group Padma Soundsystem. Translated into English, Yeshe Dorje means immutable wisdom. Yeshe Dorje has been practicing Tibetan Buddhism since 1994. He also has an extensive professional background in management consulting, workshop facilitation, adult education and leading group meditation. He has graduate degrees in feminist theory (MA Dalhousie, Halifax Nova Scotia) and Industrial Relations (MSc London School of Economics, London England), and has a life long interest in the science of human consciousness.

Inside The Walls

Walking across the yard, women sitting about in prison greens, I hear a voice call out, ‘Hey Bronnie, I’ve got a kick-arse song to play to you later’. I’ve just been checked in through security at the Correctional Center for Women and am about to start my weekly songwriting and guitar class.

The idea of the program had surfaced more than eighteen months before. But I had no idea to how to approach the prison system, find funding and get it up and running. Through some unplanned but perfect steps, I met a fantastic woman who was highly knowledgeable about the private philanthropy sector in Australia. She happily shared her knowledge with me on ways to bring the idea into reality and continued to educate and help me enormously. She also introduced me to a theater group working in the Victorian prison system. It turns out that I’d been living right next door to them ten years earlier and they were already running their program then. So I was able to ask them even more questions.

One step led to another, my confidence growing, realizing it was now an achievable goal. The willingness and support from the Education Department at the prison helped me to hang in there when funding applications continued to challenge. Eventually a grant was approved, enabling the program to get underway. I have learned a great deal about philanthropy as a bi-product of this journey. While it is at times a long and frustrating process, the knowledge gained is an unexpected gift not wasted.

Many of the inmates are there for drug and alcohol related crimes. Most, though not all, come with tragic histories of abuse, family dysfunction, incredibly low self esteem and a tough exterior shielding deep wounds. It was from a healing perspective that I chose to teach, creating the curriculum around writing from the senses, expressing emotions and allowing wounds to be released.

It took my best and driest humor to crack a smile in that first class, while they were all sussing me out. Before long, the women started warming to me and by the end of the class some were contributing well to discussions. By the second and third week, laughter and tears were flowing freely. Sometimes regulars won’t be in class. There are some very hard days for them when they just can’t face anyone.

Most have kids in foster homes through Community Services, some
1000
are waiting on hearings, which can be delayed month after month, some can’t face each other due to relationship tensions, and some just come up with the craziest excuses. Generally though, the class is now one of the highlights of their week and all are regular students. I was told to shut up at the start of one recent class as they were ‘busting their arses’ to play me a song. Shut up I did. It was beautiful.

The women also play their guitars now out in the compound, bringing music to other inmates who would not be hearing live music in any other way. Their pride and improved self esteem is the biggest and most rewarding change so far. Class is a supportive environment and while all show different levels of talents, each woman is a valuable contributor to what we all share.

Most had never even played guitar before and are initially incredibly nervous to perform. Nerves that totally cripple them when hands shake too much to hit strings, voices choke up and breathing almost ceases. Having come from that place once myself, I now also cover the power of the mind and the rewards of mental discipline. Watching a student go from that level of nerves to playing solo in front of over a hundred people left this very proud teacher unable to hold back her tears.

One student is planning on studying music on her release. Another, a former songwriter, has reconnected with that part of herself after more than a decade. Another said that this is the first time that she’s been inside that she hasn’t been constantly thinking about heroin, as her songwriting ideas are taking up more time. And yet another, who has never written a creative piece in her life, arrives in class on time every week, sits in the front row and comes out with verses that would challenge the very best of songwriters.

I do cover technicalities, song structure, guitar tuition, writing exercises and basic music theory. But I have chosen to teach much more from an emotional point of view. And teaching women with such vulnerabilities and lives of sadness, this is proving to be the best way.

It is easy as songwriters and musicians to write off ideas to be a teacher, comparing ourselves to others in the field more skilled. But knowledge is for sharing and by approaching teaching as a gift of giving, one cannot help but receive so much more than ever given.

The joy of music transcends prison walls and cultural differences. It is about music and through those stories comes healing, sharing, inspiration and eventually laughter. There are tears too. But sometimes they are tears of joy, from a teacher who counts her blessings, for the courage to have made this dream a reality.

Sound Heals!
by: Keith Varnum

Music Medicine Soothes the Soul and the Body

Researchers throughout the world are reporting intriguing new ways about how sound vibration heals the body, mind, spirit and the environment. The words people choose to speak and the music people listen to have profound power to decrease pain, draw people out of emotional and mental isolation and even clear polluted water. And scientists are discovering that certain deep space sounds are amazingly similar to the sounds of dolphins, Tibetan bowls and human choirs.

Why Is this Important to You?

Because you can use music, song, vibration and words to dramatically affect your own health and the well-being of other people. The impact, potential and mystery of the healing power of sound is demonstrated in the following heart-warming true stories.

Wake Up and Dance, Little Suzy

Do you remember the movie “Awakenings?” Based on a true story, the film features the work of neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks with Parkinson’s disease patients. Many of these patients whose bodies had been immobile for decades from the effects of Parkinson’s began groovin’ to the sounds of music. Patients who had not left their wheelchairs for years, got up and began dancing to certain types of music.

After the success of these patients, Sacks, teamed up with the music director from the Institute for Physical and Neurologic Function and has been using music as therapy with miraculous results. According to the music director, patients who can’t walk “bound out of their chairs and start dancing as long as the music is present. For people who have motor problems, music acts as a catalyst.”

Potent Prayer Power

When a Buddhist priest prayed for an hour over the polluted water in a lake behind a dam in Japan, the crystalline structure of the water changed from malformed and distorted to one of immense beauty and power. The lake was transformed into a healthy source of pure water. A distinctly visible aura appeared around the water crystals in photographs.

Autistic Man “Flew the Coop”

A music therapy instructor from Yale University tells a breakthrough story about Jerry, a 26-year-old man who wouldn’t speak, whose mental age was between 2 and 8 and who threw extremely self-destructive tantrums. Jerry was so transformed by music therapy that he was able to free himself from his “autistic mold” and create a way to support himself in the world. What’d he do? Pairing up with a graphic designer, Jerry launches a profitable greeting card company. Jerry writes many of the messages and helps design the cards. Aptly, they name the company “Flew the Coop.”

Trippy Space Sounds

What do the sounds of dolphins, human choirs and Tibetan bowls have in common? The sounds they make are uncannily similar to tones found in outer space.

While examining the recordings of spacecrafts Voyager I and II at the California Institute for Human Science, scientists discover that sounds produced by the rings of Uranus are virtually identical to those produced by Tibetan bowls. Sounds emitted by the planet Jupiter strongly compare to the high- pitched cries of dolphins. And sounds from the smallest moon of Uranus resemble vocal choirs.

Researchers believe that this similarity is no coincidence. The cosmic vibrations of dolphins, bowls and choirs are currently being used to stimulate alignment and healing at the cellular level.

“Tibetan bowls” are used spiritually to assist people to relax plus the bowl’s vibration gently helps “break up” old patterns of behavior that are no longer useful or healthy.

Rockabye Baby

Hospitals report that newborns who are sung or spoken to on a regular basis go home 3-5 days earlier and weigh more than babies who aren’t exposed to specific periods of adult speech or song. 50% of women who listen to music during childbirth don’t need anesthesia.

A New Symphony

We are only hearing the first few bars in the symphony of healing that awaits humanity as we open to the dynamic harmonious effects of sound.

Many people I work with in therapy or in my writing-as-healing classes discover stories that surprise them—stories about the mistakes they felt their parents made, power imbalances in the family, or stories about physical or sexual abuse. The darker stories are often a surprise: when writers sat down to write, those issues were not directly on their minds, but deep, revealing stories erupted from the pen. Though they were unexpected, for some they were a relief. People who have been in therapy have had the same kind of experience—the subject matter in the forefront of the mind is not the material that “accidentally” arises during the session. The therapy session begins with a particular subject in the present—for example dissatisfaction at work or trouble in a relationship, but often travels back in time with associations to parents, school, or past relationships.

It has become a cliché to talk about “dysfunctional” relationships and families, but most people do not have perfect families, and many have had to struggle with a range of problems—alcoholism, abuse—physical, sexual, or emotional, eating disorders, and depression, to name a few. No one likes to be reminded of the past but when it keeps coming up, we are pushed to learn new responses as we search for more peace and positivity in our lives.

The past is not dead—it’s not even past. -William Faulkner

Different kinds of abandonment

For people who have been abandoned, either literally by actual physical absence, or emotionally—a parent can be in the home and not there for us—the abandoned child syndrome may remain years later, showing up through insecurities and fears, clinging behaviors or its opposite—walls to intimacy. The abandoned child inside the adult can create havoc such as alcohol abuse, repeating their own abandonment by abandoning children, or refusal to have children out of fear of repetition. Depression, lack of energy and creativity, anger, and trying to fill up the emptiness may be manifestations of these issues.

When the abandoned child is feeling its pain and loss, the rest of the adult person is unable to find emotional balance. New skills are needed to help sort out the confusion, and to create new, healthier patterns. Part of the healing may include grieving and anger, as those repressed feelings are released. But it is equally important to look at strengths: how well you are doing and what you want to contribute to the world as well as the positive side of parents and caretakers. Most people do the best they can.

Healing is a process of peeling the onion, so to speak. Revealing one layer after another, with time for rest and integration, leads to inner peace, resolution, and forgiveness.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Write about parallels between the past and the present. Become more aware of old patterns finding their way into your current life.

2. List all the ways you feel you were abandoned. Don’t worry if the list doesn’t make logical sense or is too long or short. Just write what you feel and remember.

3. Look at photographs of you and your family from those time periods as a way to help you remember details. Becoming more aware of the past can help you sort issues in the present.

4. Write an “unsent letterԗdo not send it!—to your mother, telling her all the ways you appreciated her.

5. Now write an “unsent letter” listing the ways she let you down. DO NOT send unsent letters in the exercise—these are just ways for you to help yourself to heal.

Do the same for your father.

1. Write about your intentions for today, this week—what do you want to change? What are you goals in your life now?

2. What are you doing well now, and how is it different and better than what you or your family might have done in the past?

3. What are your strengths? Name 10 things your friends would say are your best traits.

4. Write about how you are your best friend. How you take care of yourself and like yourself.

Ayurveda is a scheme of customary therapy that has been practiced in India since the early Vedic era. This system is still practiced in many areas of the world as a form of option medicine where it is has massive influence. This traditional healing system has been evolving throughout its existence and is now accepted in the western world as an alternative system of medicine. The Ayurvedic system is famous and accepted within the western world as a form of Harmonizing and Alternative Medicine or CAM. Some of it systems and methods have enjoyed a surge of popularity. The use of herbs, massages, and yoga exercises has been used to complement usual and contemporary medical therapies. They are sometimes even used on their own as a complete form of CAM treatment.

Sushruta, an Ayurvedic doctor and author living about 1000 B.C., tells perfect health as a state where all of one’s doshas, also known as structure, are in perfect equilibrium, whose appetite is wonderful, whose dhatus or tissue layers, function normally, whose malas or excretory systems, and whose self, senses, and mind remain full of bliss is in perfect health. As the philosophy of Ayurveda states, everything in our world has a unique personal vibration. All matter animate and inanimate has this distinct personal vibration different from all matter. Only when there is an uninterrupted and free flow of this energy within a person is that individual in good health. When there are disturbances in the flow, this causes illness within the person.

In our current world, which is full of potential health hazards, brought about by our contaminated environment, poor eating habits, bad lifestyle choices, and high stress jobs, it would be extremely complicated to find an individual with a harmonious and free flow of energy within. The minds and bodies of most people today are in a state of imbalance because of this situation. Ayurveda wants to restore the balance of the energy flow within a person and thus bring on a state of health homeostasis.

Ayurvedic medicine uses ragas or Raga to create the melodies of healing music. Tones of the Raga are both sharper and flatter than the tones in western scales. The Raga is an Indian mode of music that is defined as that which colors the mind. This music has spiritual connections which western sound does not. Ragas are believed to have good therapeutic effects on a lot of diseases including pain, insomnia, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and even aging. Ayurvedic music has been proven to control hypertension and liver function.

Ayurvedic music create vibrations in the cells of the body. These vibrations can change the consciousness of the individual in a positive way thereby restoring lost health. Music has been known to improve efficiency and concentration during extended periods of work. The right type of music can soothe, refresh and induce a relaxed mood. Music also manages negative emotions like anger, anxiety, and worry.

Red Elephant Music has created spa music and custom spa CDs for some of the world’s top Spas. Find out how they can assist your spa. http://www.redelephantmusic.com/spa-music/ayurveda-music.

There are two kinds of healings, one is physical and one is mental, and one guesses to which one is the more powerful one. Physical healing is really simple. It is the defence mechanism of the body to prevent the further spread of infection and disease. The blood will normally clot (if there is a wound internally or externally) and antibodies within the body will come in and clean up, the skin will harden (for external wounds) and healing will begin. Healing is a process that should take a few days, and the body is naturally equipped to deal with most things.

Of course serious injuries might require the help of outside doctors and surgeons, depending on the severity of the case, so you need to look at it at a case by case basis. Surprisingly enough, the body is quite relentless and resilient as a healing machine. It is naturally designed to be efficient and have the strong elements within it to rid itself of any external disease.

One thing you need to realise is that the body adapts. It is not ‘little girl’ to viruses that constantly mutate and change. The body can adapt to the introduction of a new virus and change the make-up of its antibodies and defence mechanisms to actually better fight off the virus the next time it tries to attach itself to the body. The other form of healing is mental healing, which happens when you have emotional trauma or injury, or if you are facing stress or depression. There are drugs to help you with the mental healing, although it sometimes is a matter of time.

The difference between the two is that mental healing is slow, and sometimes doesn’t happen at all if the trauma was too great or if there was great emotional scarring. But seemingly the weaker of the two, it is the mind that can evoke a faster recovery in physical healing and it is the power of the mind that can wipe out any emotional and neural injury within the psychological makeup of the human being. This is why healing techniques of the mind is the most powerful of them all, because of its universal nature. Understanding this, you might be interested to know how to gain control of the sometime flighty mind, and you need to do this with relaxation techniques, yoga and aroma therapy are really good options when you are considering how to relax the mind.

Positive affirmation and new age mental messaging are also two potent ways in which you can train the mind to heal better. Brainwave entrainment is another way to go – a method which is much more focused, results orientated and effective. Think about this, a person who is in acute depression can actually fall sick, degenerate and die. The will to not live is something so powerful that it affects the functions of the person inside. Organs stop functioning and soon they wither. This is how powerful the mind is and if you can use that for good, for healing techniques – then you can overcome anything.

I’m sick, or dying. Nobody can help me now…Can they?

Many of you are suffering from a physical, mental, or emotional illness right now. Some of you have been suffering for quite some time now. You have prayed to be healed and nothing has happened. You now question whether healing by faith is possible today.

So what’s in this for me?

In the grand scheme of time, the 1950s through 1970s was just a day ago. During that time in America, Kathryn Kuhlman (born 1907, died 1976) was the best known faith healer. If you read of her or her works, you will discover that many people who were healed through her ministry doubted faith healing as being available for them.

Those same people checked out Miss Kuhlman prior to their being healed. Some would listen for weeks on the radio before they went to a meeting. Others would go in person a number of times before accepting the availability and reality of faith healing for today. A fascinating book that covers this is I Believe In Miracles by Kathryn Kuhlman (Bridge Publishing, Inc, 1962).

If you dare to go back just a few more years, you will learn of an Englishman named Smith Wigglesworth. He was born in 1859 and died in 1947. When he was a young businessman, he met some fellow Christians in Leeds, England. They believed in faith healing and practiced it every weekend. He would go to Leeds every weekend to pick up supplies for his business as well as attend their church service. Eventually he became convinced of the soundness of their teaching and chose to believe that healing was available and possible for people of his day.

Not only did Wigglesworth become convinced it was theoretically possible for people of his day to be healed by faith in Jesus Christ, but every weekend he would take sick people from his town to the Leeds Healing House to be healed. That was a 9 mile journey each way.

Eventually on a certain weekend, Wigglesworth was asked to lead the service by the two leaders since they had a prior engagement elsewhere that they could not get out of attending. Smith Wigglesworth agreed to stand in for them and…people were healed in that service. That was the beginning of his remarkable healing ministry.

POINT: To be healed miraculously by faith in Jesus Christ, you have to come to where the healings are taking place. Go and observe. Ponder on it and ask the Holy Spirit to settle things for you intellectually.

Where are the healings taking place in your city?

In the summer, if you wanted to take a cool, refreshing swim in a pool, you would go to where you KNEW there was a pool. You would not go to the barren desert on the possibility that there might be a pool there. Yet — isn’t this the behavior pattern you have been showing or are showing when you go to a church where there is no healings taking place?

Importance Of Instrumental Music In Yoga

An intimate touch of sound or music can penetrate the whole being of human body. From the ancient ages this is a proven fact. Particularly in India, music for its rich root is considered as an integral part of Yoga practicing. And India has also a rich source of instrumental music with its innumerable kinds of musical instruments be it classical, traditional or folk. Every kind, every type and every genre has its own distinct characteristics. The mild and melodious tunes of flute or the healing sound of sitar, each one soothes the mind and soul. Instrumental music can be used as the best kind of meditation music. As the beautiful sounds of instruments help the mind and soul to relax and concentrate on a single thought.

Yoga or meditation is a way to connect oneself with the divine power or God. Gods and Goddesses often have a close association with music. It is said that the melodious tune from the flute of Krishna, the God of love, overflows this earth with serene divinity. Musical instruments are also used to worship Saraswati, the Goddess of music. Instrumental music frees the mind from all mundane thoughts and pulls the mind towards the Divine. Thus, it transforms the mind into a higher level of concentration required in practicing Yoga. Music also plays a significant role in some particular forms of Yoga like Hatha yoga or Kundalini Yoga.

Traditional musical instruments like flute or bansuri, tanpura and sitar are mainly suitable to form the base of yoga music for their calming sounds. Generally these instruments are used to compose the music-tracks of Yoga DVDs which relieve the mind from all anxieties, tensions or worries thus helping it to relax. The sound of bansuri is perfect to be used in meditation or yoga. Sometimes natural sounds like sounds of waterfalls or birdsong when woven with instrumental music creates a harmony between the mother nature and human kind. This heavenly symphony makes the Union with the Absolute amazingly smooth and perpetual.

Music heightens the consciousness of human being which is a pre-requisite for practicing any kind of yoga – be it Kundalini yoga, Karma yoga, Nada yoga or Vikrama yoga. But vocal music can distract the mind as the mind seems to get involved in understanding the lyrics and voice. Whereas calm and relaxing instrumental music i
s free from such kind of mind-distraction features. Minimal use of heavy sounds or instruments and maximum use of mind-refreshing light sounds evoke the spiritual sense within. Nothing can be better than these tranquil tunes as meditation music. Incorporating these types of music into yoga practicing can lead to a greater level of self-realization and attainment of moksha.

Spirit Voyage, an online music company, is rich with its massive collection of instrumental yoga music suitable for practicing yoga or meditation. This collection will surely transform the mind of the practitioner into a higher level of divine calmness.
