Music and sound healing is not a new concept. Cultures throughout the world have used music to empower, energize, heal and soothe the body, mind and spirit since time immemorial. It is no accident that Apollo, the Greek god who is credited as being the father of medicine, is also the father of music and the inventor of the lyre.

Music and healing are part of each other, and current research is pointing to that more and more. Recent studies have shown that music can slow down and help balance brain waves, reduce tension and stress by affecting endorphin levels, reduce physical tension by changing the vibrational frequency of cells, and even evoke feelings of love and inner peace.

Of course, if music can slow down your body’s rhythms and effect soothing, peace and healing, it can also have the opposite effect. A well-chosen set of music can help energize you and prepare you to work hard and be creative. Studies have also shown that athletes working out and practicing to music use more energy, stretch themselves further and burn more calories than those who work without music.

There’s a great deal of information available now about music and healing. Sound healing, music therapy, and the power of sound to effect changes in the mind, body and spirit are becoming more and more accepted. It’s sometimes difficult to tell how much is true and how much is marketing hype.

I became interested in the healing power of music as a by-product of trying to produce the most beautiful music possible. Years back, Leonard Bernstein invited me to perform as concertmaster in the world premiere his production of Mass. While there, he invited me along to speak with management and producers in the recording industry.

I learned from them, to my surprise, that the violin, the instrument that I consider the most beautiful and evocative of any, was not considered by the recording industry to be a marketable sound – that people would not buy recordings that featured the violin.

That piece of news amazed me. To me, the violin is the most beautiful, evocative and versatile instrument ever created. In the hands of a skilled musician, the violin can gloat, laugh, exult or cry. It can express nearly any emotion that humans can feel in their hearts and souls. I challenged myself then to produce works of music that presented the violin as I know it – the evocative and expressive voice of the soul.

That was the beginning of my own music label and catalog, Li-Sem Enterprises. As it grew, I began to hear from those who work in the fields of healing, both the traditional hospitals and doctors’ offices, and those working in CAM (complementary and alternative medicine), telling me that they were using my music in their practices, to enhance meditation, focus awareness and evoke emotions.

Perhaps the most potent, powerful story that I heard was that of a teenage boy diagnosed with schizophrenia who did not speak at all, but who, while listening to my CD Fragrance of a Dream, looked up and said, “This music is so beautiful it breaks your heart.”

Those stories and touches from others led me to begin exploring the world of healing with sound and music, and what I find both amazes me and confirms my own belief that music is one of the most potent healing tools the world has ever possessed. I am still very much a student, a pilgrim on a quest to learn all that I can about the ways that different tones, vibrations and sounds can affect the body and attune with the emotions and the spiritual.

It is a wonderful journey, and one that I intend to share with as many people as I can. As a beginning of that sharing, here are some things that I have learned, and that I believe about how music helps to heal and regenerate the body.

1. Your body will heal itself if you give it the right tools. I believe that some music can help your body to heal by helping it to realign its balance. At the same time, it is far too early in the research for anyone to tell you which musical selections will heal a specific medical condition. I would be irresponsible if I recommended that music replace other more traditional forms of healing and therapy. Music is a complementary way to give your body the tools that it needs to help itself heal.

2. One of the most important and effective things that you can do for your body is to help it relax into a meditative state. There is a great deal of research to support that a state of meditative calm inspires your body and your mind to renew itself.

3. Sound is one of the best tools for inspiring the meditative state in which your body is receptive to healing and renewal – but it is important to choose your music carefully. Some music – classical music in particular – seems to go there instinctively, but most music was not designed to relax you.

We are barely beginning to understand the ways that music affects us and effects healing in us. The research is exciting and ongoing, and I spend a great deal of time working with different bodies of healers in various fields to aid this research in all the ways that I can.

I incorporate what I have learned into the production of the titles and arrangements chosen for every new Li-Sem Catalog release in the hopes that this wonderful gift that I was given, the gift of making music, can become a gift to others – one that helps heal and refresh and renew, and in the process becomes part of a positive change in the world.

GENESIS: …the light of divine creation was initiated by sound; “God said…”

According to most spiritual teachings the primary force is sound; divine speech set things in motion, divine sound being the cause of all manifestation.

Ancient rishi’s (sages) conclude that the pronunciation of vowels correspond to the vibration of the 5 inner planets, these are: Venus (O), Jupiter (A), Saturn (E), Mars (I), Mercury (U).  These divine sounds reverberate through the universe.

Some sounds are healing. Healing does not mean curing, it refers to improvement of symptoms & conditions.  At last the power of sound and sound waves are recognized by scientists around the globe.  Organized sound, such as mantra’s and music, is currently used in many healing practices.

MANTRA’S

Mantra: the Sanskrit word for divine speech (among other things).  A mantra is a mystical religious poem, an ancient formula of divine sounds, an energy based sound.

In the opinion of the spiritual leader of the Sufi order ~ Vilajat Inayat Khan ~   “The practice of mantra kneads the flesh of the body.”  With vibration of divine sound, mantras can help us feel more serene, invigorated and emotionally stimulated.  According to Vedic belief, speech (sound) is the essence of humanity. Words produce physical vibrations, coupled with mental intention influencing the result.  Mantras create thought energy waves, and are a powerful tool used by the mind.  A mantra energizes prana (life energy), and quiets the mind.

One of the most primitive sounds is the sound OM. (ohm, aum)  The Upanishads teach us that  ”…the essence of all beings is earth, the essence of earth is water, the essence of water is plant, the essence of plant is man, the essence of man is sound (reason), the essence of sound is divine wisdom, the essence of divine wisdom is the sound of the word, and the essence of the sound of the word is AUM.”

Here we learn that   A, which vibrates in the lower part of our body, stands for the waking state (Vaishwanara) ~  U, which vibrates @ heart center, stands for dreaming state (Taijasa) ~  M, which vibrates in the head, stands for deep sleep (Prajna) ~  These are the three states of consciousness, the fourth state is the “self” ( the essence of consciousness) which is present in all three states and also apart from it. The sound vibration AUM then connects the top part of the body with the bottom part.

The whole world, including our bodies, is made up of vibrational energy. It stands to reason, then, that we are affected by sound. Any sound. Quantum physics attest to the vibrational quality of all existence.

MUSIC

Organized sound such as music, can raise our inner being to a blissful state, and divine peacefulness.  Clinical studies show the profound effect sound (music) has on our bodies, treating patients affected by Alzheimer, Cancer, and post surgical trauma.

My research and personal experience has shown me that music can stabilize our heart rate, improve our immune system, energize our body, lower & stabilize our blood pressure.  Music can also produce endorphins, nourish our DNA, generate important proteins in our body (interleukin1&2, which stimulates disease fighting cells).  Music improves conditions such as stress, insomnia, emotional well being, and a vast array of other conditions and illnesses.  Music also improves learning and retention of information.

CHANTING : a repeated rhythmic phrase, typically sung in unison by a crowd.  A monotonous repetitive song, incantation, part of a ritual. Chanting stimulates energy in the body.  Vocal chanting is particularly affective because the palate and the ear function as blueprints for the body’s nervous system.  Because of the rich phonetics, Sanskrit chanting is particularly beneficial; the complex tongue placements stimulate a vast span of energy frequencies.

OUR VOICE is our own personal sound.  If we carefully listen to the sound and intonation of our voice, we will find our essence; it will resonate in our body.

When we stay connected to the sounds of our voice, the words, content and our bodies will be congruent.  Singing is very liberating for our emotions. It liberates our soul. It lifts us up and allows us to let go completely.  No matter if we sing properly or just sounding out vowels, whether we sing alone or with others; though when we sing with others the effect is astounding. Singing affects our mood, it affects our blood pressure, pulmonary functions, nervous system…our overall health, physiological and psychological.

ANIMALS & PLANTS are also affected by sound. Bio mechanical studies show that the relationship of environmental factors, such as sound, and growth of plants is significant.  In exploring sound stimulation it is found that animals and plants are greatly affected, much like human beings.  Certain sounds help plants bear more fruit and can control pests as well.  Dogs are subdued and chickens lay more eggs while listening to classical music.

Unfortunately, currently marine mammals face threats by natural and anthropogenic sounds. Certain sounds can cause marine animals to alter their natural behavior, preventing them from hearing important sounds. It also causes loss of hearing or tissue damage.  This is very sad, especially if we consider that the sound of whales, especially the mating sounds of the humpback, has a therapeutic & healing affect on us humans.  This long slow sound, containing a range of pitches and repeated patterns, gives us a sense of stillness and peace.  This comforting sound associates us with the tranquility of the ocean.

Luckily the world is filled with activists who are trying very hard to balance out the current lack of harmony between humans and the environment.  We must try to think of what we can do to contribute to this cause, and above all we must pass the word so that we can create a greater awareness, for awareness is the first step toward healing.

Bioacoustics Therapy or sound therapy in general terms, is a technique in at involves the analysis of sound waves produced during vocalization combined with presentation of low frequency analog sound to promote healing. Human bioacoustics therapy originates from the observation that brain-wave frequencies are electrical impulses that fluctuate rhythmically in distinct patterns, clearly seen and measured by an electroenencepalogram.

 Within the broad category of sound therapy, the use of sound vibrations and frequency for therapeutic effect, bioacoustics therapy is a subcategory. Other subcategories of sound therapy include music therapy – the use of rhythm, melody, and harmony through singing, dancing, and instruments to achieve relaxation and creative states of awareness, psychoacoustic therapy – the study and use of sound perception, and Hemi- Sync. The therapeutic use of binaural beats in audio patterns.

Bioacoustics therapy is distinguished from other sound therapy subcategories by the use of human voice analysis as a representation of the person’s state of health. Voice analysis detects frequencies the person emits, known as a “signature sound”, which represents vibrational energies of the body and its functions. Sound frequencies emitted by all animals vary with their state of physical and emotional health. Physical functioning, genetic and environmental factors all influence these frequencies which can be detected with bioacoustics equipment. Once the altered vibrations are detected with voice analysis, the body’s energy field is harmonized by listening to one’s personalized corrected sound frequencies. These frequencies support health and enable healing.

The spontaneous otoacoustic emissions coming from people are a function of the auditory nerve fibers in the central nervous system and sensitivity of the basilar to one specific frequency. “Signature Sound” which seemed to be coming from their ears. That these sounds are known as otoacoustic emissions, a sound which is generated from within the human. Research at the Ohio University Speech and Hearing Department in Athens clearly demonstrated that human speech creates complex waveforms. Earlier research conducted in 1988 by Susan Alexander and bio-molecular engineer Dr. David Deamer measured the vibrational frequencies of the four DNA base molecules, translating each into a unique sound.

Sound was thought to be the principle tool in healing by the ancients, including the Egyptians, who used chants and sounding instruments to manipulate energy fields and bring about balance in the body. Pythagoras thought that sound Was a creative force and music held therapeutic benefits to the body. Sound vibrations apparently were associated with creation weather of the world or individual life patterns. A study of ancient cultures reveals that Chinese healers used ‘singing stones’ in their rituals. Thin jade plates were used to generate different sounds. The Sufis consider ‘HU’ to be creative sound. Tibetans consider the notes of A, F sharp and G to be powerful sacred sounds. The sound of ‘AUM’ is the main primal sound in the beginning of each sacred chant. Amen is associated with the creative principle of the universe. Ancient mystery schools associated with rhythm with the body, melody with emotions, and harmony, lifted consciousness to spiritual awareness. For therapeutic purposes, laurel Elizabeth Keyes, a Denver author and lecturer, has developed a system of voices to bring balance to the body called ‘toning.’ nearly all our actions and reactions result from words and our thinking is limited to them. Beneath the words are vibrations of the tones upon which they travel. Tone is the underlying force operating in our lives. Jim Gimzewski, a nanotechnologist at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Andrew Pelling have discovered the sound of yeast cells is clearly distinguishable from mammalian cells.  From planets and super massive black holes to cells and DNA, to the human voice, everything vibrates and creates sound.

Mrs. Keyes, who has studied under a number of eastern and western teachers, found that toning burst through mental restrictions and released tensions and soon discovered  that  each time she toned, her body felt exhilarated; there was feeling of wholeness and extreme well being. When she let the tone pass out , with no attempt to control it, it seemed to cleanse the entire body, releasing tensions in the congested areas.

Resent scientific theories developed along a line of field theory have substantiated. her concept is that every living thing has a field containing a pattern of perfection for manifestation. The pattern for a flower in a seed, of the bird within the egg. Interference with the field will change the pattern, and illness or malformations will result. She explains that as tone goes out, it collects substance from the word around it forming very tangible manifestations.

Whining voices attract negative condition. By getting a person to change his tone of voice, he begins to change his life. By releasing tension and stimulating circulation and nerve energy in the body, Mrs. Keyes says she finds toning is a natural process of healing. It releases a pattern of perfection within each person.

Our body is colloidal in nature and colloids are clusters of energies and easily can be influenced by external energy vibrations. Toning, chanting, verbal prayer will give needed positive change to the colloidal surface in the person. One will find there is a tone which resonates with the pain. Place a finger to your nose and hum directing the sound to the spot and notice the sensation. Every pain has a companion tone and by pulsating the tone softly for a time will be relieved from pain. Let the sound sweep down flushing trough the body.

To practice toning, stand erect, feet several inches apart, stretch the arms high and let them drop back, shoulders swinging on the spine in perfect balance. The eyes must be closed. Then begin to look inward and feel. To counteract the usual tendency to cave in and bend forward, the torso must ride on the pelvic structure, with the hip bones protruding a little. Standing erect should cause no strain but give an easy relaxed feeling.

Relax the jaws so that the teeth are slightly parted. Let sound come up from it; not down upon it , but up, from your feet. Let the body groan. Encourage it to be vocal. Always start with low groans, let the body groan as long as it likes. You may think you have nothing to groan about, but you will be surprised. All the hurts you have received are buried in your subconscious, and groaning offers them to release. Once the door is opened, repressed feelings begin to flow out. The groan may burst into protests or the voice may sore off into bird like singing or spontaneous outbursts of worship or prayer.

What ever happens, don’t let the mind influence it. Make the sound obedient; be still, watch, learn something of the host of the body in which you, as the consciousness, are only a guest.

The session may last only ten minutes but, when he body feels cleaned, a sigh will be released and you will know the body-voice is satisfied. The involuntary sigh is the signal. You feel good, as though something has been accomplished and you have brought yourself together into a harmonious whole. As soon as the sigh is released and cleansing for that time is complete, something must be offered to fill the emptied cup. Simply relax by listening to good soothing classical music, or by strolling in a garden.  It is better if the body is subjected to higher state of universal cosmic energies as the body responds well in absorbing cosmic energies after the voice cleansing.

The most effective bio-acoustic and powerful sound is ‘AUM’. the whole cosmology is believed to be vibrating with the sound of ‘AUM’ and is responsible for creation and manifestation of  the universe. Chanting AUM which is some what resonates with ‘OM’, will attune the body to these cosmic forces and uplift your conscious level and awareness.

 Sit in a comfortable position, preferably in Padmasana posture and start uttering AUM in lower octaves in a natural way. The pronouncing should resonate with ‘OM’. The method of uttering can be as; OOOOOOOUMMMMMMM,. Start with the beginning of  full inhalation and continue till end of exhalation. Start feeling the vibrations and focus on it mentally and go on varying the pitch slightly up and down, keeping the sound at lower frequencies. It is important to very the frequency of the humming sound at lower frequencies until you find at some frequency level, resonance effect is observed wherein the vibrations are felt strongly in the chest area. After a few days of practice, start feeling the resonance in different parts of the body at upper torso level, by directing the resonating sound mentally, preferably on abdomen and throat portions. This is the fundamental concept of science that maximum flow of energy takes place wherever there is resonance between two states of energy entities and they in turn are in harmonic state. A string in a violin will start vibrating to the sound frequencies in the ambient frequencies of harmonic sound. 

Speaking in the terms of scientific way, the brain perceives sound and delivers these frequency patterns to the body via nerve pathways, the sound wave pulses serve as directives along the electromagnetic field lines of the body, The laryngeal nerve, a branch of the vagus nerve, innervates laryngeal muscles which create vocal sounds by oscillating the vocal cords. This direct conduit from the brain and body to the vocal cords suggests a message pathway, supporting the theory that frequencies in the voice are representations of activity in the autonomic nervous system.

 Bioacoustics therapy researches these patterns for specific clues regarding the health of the speaker, and the relationship between discordant patterns and symptoms of disease and distress. When discordance is identified, low frequency analog sound formulas are delivered as a means of balancing the disharmony, promoting the body’s innate ability to self-heal through entrainment additionally; the frequency patterns are studied for their relationship to a predictable mathematical matrix used to formulate sound frequency interventions.

DNA and chromosomal function receives information and is altered by sound and light. Dr. Leonard Horowitz of Harvard University won three Nobel laureates in medicine and proved that the primary function of DNA lies in the realm of bioacoustic and bioelectric signaling. Dr. Horowitz showed that DNA emits and receives photons or electromagnetic waves of sound and light. There is recent development in the field of DNA and Brain music. Music will be used as an integral element of improving DNA.

In an environment of violent sound, such as a war or emergency situation, sound can negatively program the DNA and damage it. This damage can be corrected or reprogrammed when the optimal cellular resonance is restored. Classical or new age music is a great way to enhance your DNA’s ability to receive and transmit information and enhance your torsion field. It is important to use many different types of music to allow the DNA a full range of adaptability of information receipt and transmission.There are many other ways to enhance the torsion field in our body like sunlight, negatively charged fresh air, clean water, natural medicines, and healthy foods.

Another way to improve and repair DNA on a cellular level is acupuncture. Acupuncture can be used on the pericardium and heart meridians to activate the thymus gland and improve immune function. This can be very useful in treating autoimmune diseases. Increased the energy in these meridians can activate higher frequencies. Higher frequencies lead to lower cellular oxidation rates and less cellular aging. Acupuncture on the Du and Ren meridians can raise frequencies, increase hormone levels, and slow aging. Acupuncture can also be used to alter the electron spin and form of  the torsion wave. Using acupuncture in this manner will alter the cellular aging rate and slow free radical production by changing the electron spin rate and direction of spin. This action will change the form rather than the motion of the torsion field.

The electromagnetic energy field and resonance must be enhanced to heal the brain. There must be optimal brain function in order for the long term health of a person to be sustained. Undifferentiated cells choose their path of differentiation through the DNA’s ability to transmit information. When the DNA’c ability to receive or transmit information is altered through a damaged electromagnetic field,  the resonance and torsion wave are changed and cell differentiation is altered. This can result in the creation of tumors and cancer.

Russian research by Gariaev showed that chromosomes function similar to programmable holographic biocomputers employing DNA’s own electromagnetic radiation. Their research shows that DNA is genetic script that allows chromosomes to produce and receive information contained in these scripts in order to encode and decode them Chromosomes assemble themselves into a holographic lattice designed to generate and interpret highly stable spiral standing waves of sound and light that govern most biological functions. The Gariaev team modulated certain linguistic frequencies onto a laser. With these language-modulated codes translated into radio and light waves, they repaired damaged chromosomes, regrew endocrine glands, stimulated regrowth of new adult teeth, and successfully altered genetic expression.  Dr. Yu Dzang Kangeng also used torsion energy to map DNA sequences between organisms and produced similar results. Using radio and light waves keyed to human language frequencies to rewrite DNA, Gariaev’s team literally transformed frog embryos into healthy salamander embryos in the laboratory. They literally altered species development.

Can this technique be used in the future to produce new brains for those severely damaged by trauma or drug addiction? Other technology will allow DNA to be enhanced to enhanced, and brains currently are destroyed by Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or Huntington’s diseases will treated with this healing therapy to improve torsion field and resonance and prevent or slow these diseases.
