<p>More than 100 million Americans suffer with some form of chronic back pain.  This epidemic problem, represents the number one reason for lost productivity and efficiency in American Corporations today. Whether you suffer with lower, middle, or upper back pain, it can be both debilitating, and compromising toward one&#8217;s work and lifestyle, making it difficult or<span id="more-311"></span> even impossible to perform the most basic daily tasks.  </p>
<p>Because of technological advances in the past 50 years alone, it is not uncommon for us to find ourselves sitting for long periods of time; weather in traffic, relaxing at home or just working on the computer for hours on end.  What most of us don&#8217;t realize, is that sitting is inherently bad for the back.  Why?  Because the seated posture creates an imbalance in the spine, which causes the back to age at an accelerated rate.   It&#8217;s no surprise then, that back problems have become the nemesis of our time, creating problems for millions of people everywhere.  And when lifestyle or cultural practices become a contributing factor in back pain, then it&#8217;s essential that we adopt effective strategies for improving back health and work to reduce all forms of spinal disease, which are preventable.  Various remedies, when applied regularly, can result in a reduction of painful symptoms, which, when combined with a few simple corrective activities, work together to restore the overall health of the back by eliminating or even reversing the things that lead to an accelerated loss of flexibility, mobility and function.   </p>
<p>1) Pain-relieving creams</p>
<p>A naturally occurring analgesic, known as &#8220;Capsaicin&#8221;, also the main ingredient found in chili peppers, can be an effective natural pain reliever.  A cream or lotion preparation of Capsaicin is applied by rubbing into the skin, directly over the affected area.  While an initial stinging sensation is normal, a neuro-chemical pain transmitter, known as &#8220;Substance P&#8221; becomes depleted as the Capsaicin is absorbed, resulting in a numbing of pain symptoms.  Available in most health and drug stores, a typical formulation of Capsaicin cream, will have an active ingredient concentration of 0.025%.  </p>
<p>2) Yoga and conventional exercises</p>
<p>Yoga, through strengthening poses and breathing techniques, has been found to decrease upper back pain and lower back pain.  In a recent study, people suffering from chronic sharp back pain were monitored for 16 weeks.  The results proved that with regular yoga exercise, the participants experienced a significant pain reduction in disability and intensity, as well as a lowered reliance on pain medication.  People with chronic back pain can decrease their pain through yoga and conventional lower back exercises, which will exercise their muscles in order to strengthen them.  Conventional exercises, such as walking, biking, and water therapy, provide conditioning that strengthen the back, thus minimizing back pain.  </p>
<p>3) Good posture sitting and standing </p>
<p>Good posture, whether sitting or standing, plays a large role in maintaining the health of your back, and thus, impacts the level of back pain.  Whenever you are sitting down, ensure that your feet are firmly on the floor.  Make sure that your chair is comfortable and at the correct level.  If you sit for extended periods of time, you can simultaneously treat your back with correcting devices, such as the comfortable Turtle, which aids relief by supporting your lower back.  </p>
<p>When you are standing up for extended periods of time, try resting one of your legs on a step higher to give support to your lower back.  Do not let your knees lock when standing straight.  While you are sleeping, it is best to sleep on your back to relieve pressure that causes back pain, and you can put a pillow under your knees for support.  If you lay on your stomach, also use a pillow underneath to reduce lower back pain.  Pick your shoes carefully; get extra arch support and do not wear unnecessarily high-heeled shoes.  If your heels are very high it will affect your posture.</p>
<p>4) Massage therapy      </p>
<p>One of the main methods of back pain relief which immediately comes to the minds of people with sharp back pain is massage therapy.  Many healthcare professionals are also recommending massage therapy as a legitimate means to alleviate lower back pain, as well as middle back pain and upper back pain.  The popularity of this natural method of back pain relief has doubled since studies in 1997.  The greatest benefit of massage therapy is the rise of endorphin levels, which makes it an effective avenue to manage chronic back pain.  </p>
<p>5) Ice packs and heating pads</p>
<p>Use ice packs to relieve inflammation, pain, and swelling after an injury or extended use of the lower back muscles.  Keep ice on the area of back pain several times a day.  During the initial 72 hours, it is good to ice the area for approximately 10 minutes every hour.  Ice only needs to be applied three times during the day after the first few days, but again with any vigorous activities.  </p>
<p>Heat pads can also be used where there is back pain to aid in relaxing the muscles, but should not be used during the first 72 hours when an injury or onset occurs.  If you apply heat immediately, it could make the inflammation and swelling worse.</p>
<p>6)  Healthy diet that includes water</p>
<p>Eating nutritious foods that contain Vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium can prevent and relieve lower back pain and upper back pain.  When you ingest enough Vitamin B12, it has been found that back pain may be reduced. The most reliable sources of vitamin B12 are eggs, dairy products, and meat.  Magnesium has also been studied for back pain reduction, and from the 82 people studied, 76 individuals experienced less back pain symptoms after increasing magnesium in their diets.  Many green vegetables, such as spinach, are also excellent ways to get magnesium, as well as seeds and nuts.  Dehydration can contribute to back pain, and thus, it is important to drink lot of water as well.</p>

<p>Expressive Arts Therapy For Elderly Patients</p>
<p>&#8220;I just got all around the music and let it get all around me.&#8221; This is the way Lorna Smith, a resident at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in Saint Johns, Michigan, described her experience during one of the regular music therapy sessions offered by music therapist and gerontologist Dr. Stephen Hale. </p>
<p>The program<span id="more-306"></span> facilitates long-term care for residents who suffer from Alzheimer&#8217;s and other severe dementia-causing disorders. Like Smith, many of these residents, who daily battle against decreasing levels of cognitive functioning, perk up immediately as soon as Dr. Hale starts to strum his guitar. Suddenly animated, many of them begin to laugh and smile, clapping and nodding their heads in time to the rhythm. While many residents typically have trouble maintaining focus and remaining alert, as soon as Dr. Hale begins a music therapy session they make eye contact with him easily. When the music starts, their former listlessness and agitation quickly disappears. </p>
<p>&#8220;Music therapy in a long-term care setting has a particular value for residents who become isolated, withdrawn and depressed,&#8221; says Vicki Ritz, the program&#8217;s director of nursing. </p>
<p>Alzheimer&#8217;s patients are not the only ones whose lives have been significantly improved by music, art, and dance therapy. The treatment has been shown to benefit people suffering from a wide range of disorders, including schizophrenia, aphasia, autism, Tourette Syndrome, and Parkinson&#8217;s disease. </p>
<p>Elaine Hall, who adopted her autistic son, Neal, from a Russian orphanage when he was 2-years-old, has made it her mission to bring art therapy to children who have difficulty expressing themselves. </p>
<p>&#8220;I wanted to teach theater and dance to kids with autism, cerebral palsy,&#8221; attention-deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome, she said, &#8220;anything that gets somebody kicked out of everywhere else.&#8221; </p>
<p>Hall, who has been dubbed &#8220;the child whisperer&#8221; because of her knack for engaging children in performance, founded the Miracle Project as a way to carry out her mission. Formerly an acting coach for Hollywood film and television stars, Hall now prefers to focus her attention on the very young. The Mircale Project, &#8220;a musical thea<br />

ter and video arts program for children of all abilities celebrating music, dance, story and culture,&#8221; produced a documentary called &#8220;Autism: The Musical&#8221; that HBO released in 2008. The film chronicles the struggles of a group of autistic children and their families as they get ready to put on a show. </p>
<p>&#8220;The first 11 weeks were so chaotic, kids were literally hiding under tables and spinning around in circles,&#8221; Hall recalls, then whispers: &#8220;Then all of a sudden they start coming together as a group. We wrote a play. We learned songs. We wore costumes. We no longer talked about Steven hiding under tables. We we&#8217;re saying, &#8216;O.K., what role do you think Steven should play?&#8217; &#8221;</p>
<p>Today, as many as seventy universities across the country offer arts therapy programs. Once considered a dubious science at best, expressive arts therapy is now understood to be an important tool in the therapeutic process. Many researchers believe that this is due in large part to the neurological effects of music and dance. Rhythm stimulates activity in parts of the brain that control cognitive function. By promoting communication and facilitating the development of motor skills and synaptic reorganization, music and dance therapy can foster rehabilitation after a stroke or severe brain injury. </p>
<p>Music therapy is also proven to produce calming effects on the body and mind, slowing blood pressure and decreasing heart rate, blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. Because emotional wellbeing plays an important part in overall healing, expressive arts therapy is likewise an important part of the healing process. Dancing and making art and music also have a social impact that helps individuals to feel confident to express themselves and connect with others around them. Music therapists call this the &#8220;ripple effect,&#8221; a term coined by Mercedes Pavlicevic and Gary Ansdell to describe music&#8217;s ability to naturally attract people and create larger social contexts. </p>
<p>Dr. Mike Crawford, professor of Psychological Medicine at Imperial College, who studies the medical effects of creative therapies, says that at times when patients are struggling with illness they &#8220;may find it difficult to express themselves using words, but through the skill of the therapist it may be possible to help people interact&#8230;in a way that is constructive, creative and enjoyable.&#8221; </p>

<p>How To Relieve Stress, And Anxiety Using Music Healing Therapy</p>
<p>In today&#8217;s economy, people are more stressed out then ever before. It&#8217;s been a long time since I&#8217;ve seen so many people worry about their jobs, their homes, everything. So I&#8217;m writing this article to maybe help someone out there, that is having it a little rough right now.</p>
<p>A few<span id="more-304"></span> months back I too was stressing out about my job and my home, but a friend of mine told me about a site that has music that relieves stress, so I checked it out, and to my surprise it really works. I went on the site and they have a free sample (a ten minute music sample) that you can download to your computer, or MP3 player and try it for yourself, and it worked great, they have different music for what ever problems you may have such as depression, trouble sleeping, addictions, anxiety and much more.</p>
<p>So now that I got your attention I will explain how this music works. The music has what is called Binaural Beats. These beats are incorporated in the music, and they are set to different frequencies to stimulate your brain. Binaural Beats was discovered in 1893 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, and it works by broadcasting two different frequencies in each ear. The frequencies are set in the music, and are different for what ever problem you have, the music may sound the same, but are totally different. The music is soft and calming, with sounds of waterfalls and different types of animal sounds, it&#8217;s like your out in the woods, it&#8217;s great, very relaxing.</p>
<p>I love music, I grew up with music all around me, it always makes me feel good. But this music is very different, it makes you relax. When listening to this music you need to find a quiet place with no distractions, like your bedroom, also you need to put your headphones on and close your eyes and just concentrate on the music. I would not recommend listening to this when driving a car it&#8217;s too relaxing. You can download music that is fifteen minutes long, a half hour long, and longer it&#8217;s up to you. I feel that music healing therapy is the best way to relieve stress and anxiety. If you have stress in your life I highly recommend it.</p>

<p>The Art Of Healing &#8211; Music Therapy</p>
<p>We very often spend vast amounts of money on doctors, antibiotics and conventional medical treatments, but give little thought or credence to more alternative methods of healing. Less traditional techniques such asmusic therapy are not only cheaper, they can be just as effective as the most intensive medications. Music<span id="more-302"></span> therapy not only introduces people to a new way of thinking, but can help heal some of the deepest wounds. </p>
<p>What is Music Therapy? <br />
Music therapy is a way of reaching a patient and forming a patient-therapist connection through the medium of sound and music. Each individual music therapy patient has a set of therapeutic goals &#8211; anything from improved motor co-ordination to mental recovery &#8211; and music is used to try and achieve these goals. Often compared to occupational therapy and physical therapy, music therapy simply uses music as its equipment. During a music therapy session, music is used as a creative and non-verbal medium through which specific difficulties are addressed and faced. One of the strengths of music therapy is that it is a non-verbal form of communication and people can still express themselves even when words are or seem impossible. </p>
<p>Who Benefits from Music Therapy? <br />
One of the greatest things about music therapy is that it can help a range of people and a range of conditions or problems. Patients often tend to be children with learning disabilities or behavioural problems. Using music to express themselves teaches these children to both listen and interact with other children, greatly improving social skills and concentration levels. Children suffering from mental disabilities can also benefit from music therapy as it offers them an alternative way to express themselves. Very often bad behaviour in challenged children stems from frustration as they cannot make their needs clearly known. This alternative form of expression allows them to release this frustration and possibly find an alternative form of communication. <br />
Another significant group of people who can benefit from this type of therapy is children and people who have witnessed traumatic events or who have undergone an abusive or traumatic experience. Humans often bottle up their emotions or suppress frightening or unhappy memories. Music therapy provides a safe space for these emotions and<br />

experiences to be let out and worked through, allowing the patient to finally moved past them and live a happier life. </p>
<p>It is also not only children who benefit from music therapy, but it is often an effective treatment for adults suffering from disabilities, mental illness, terminal diseases or arthritis. For these adults, the relaxing and de-stressing ability that music therapy has goes a long way to help with pain relief as the patient is left in a calmer emotional state. Music therapy is used extensively with stroke victims in many countries as the rhythmic entrainment (or allowing the brain waves to fall in sync with the music and thus synchronise the two hemispheres of the brain to encourage co-ordinated physical and spatial movement) is incredibly helpful for physical rehabilitation.</p>
<p>How Does it Work? <br />
Humans all intrinsically respond to music, regardless of creed, colour or disability and music therapists use this to reach a certain set of outcomes. The techniques used include musical improvisation, singing, composition, listening, performance and movement to express what often feels inexpressible in words. The power in this lies in the fact that a voice is given to that which the patient cannot express which allows the healing process to begin. </p>
<p>One of the best ways to understand how music therapy works is to follow a real-life account of music therapy in practice. Little Caylem was three years old when he was witness to his father&#8217;s brutal murder. His trauma was left unaddressed for three years and his behaviour steadily declined. In his first music therapy sessions under the Heideveld project, he almost instantly reverted to toddler-like behaviour, indicating that he still needed to deal with what he witnessed as a three year old. By his fourth session Caylem felt secure enough to re-enact his father&#8217;s murder through the safe medium of music. He used the instruments to show what happened, with the bass drum essentially killing the piano. This first step in the healing process has already made a remarkable difference, with his teachers commenting that his classroom behaviour has greatly improved. </p>
<p>Music Therapy in South Africa<br />
Music therapy is particularly successful and powerful in South Africa as music is an intrinsic part of almost every culture contained within our borders. With many issues facing the children of South Africa, from HIV/Aids to poverty, abuse, violence and trauma, music therapy is one way that children can begin to heal. <br />
Many charities recognise that helping people is not always all about food and shelter, but that emotional healing through music, arts and culture projects can be just as important. Many projects, such as the Heideveld Project that helped Caylem, head out into the poorer areas of South Africa, like the Cape Flats and offer individual and group sessions where they teach children to cope with and overcome some of the many difficulties that they face. Music therapists are all fully trained and need to be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and most volunteer their time for these projects. This means that many music therapy projects are run by charities and rely on donations to survive, making education among the more fortunate about the benefits of music therapy vital in order to ensure continuing donations.</p>

<p>Being new to the practice of Yoga, it is always a good idea to give your body an opportunity to adapt to unusual positions that one has to go through. Always remember not to push your body beyond what it is capable of. The art and practice of Yoga was never intended to harm the practitioner&#8217;s body in any way. Without slowly adapting to the processes, one might end up pulling muscles, stretching ligaments, tendons, or even ripping them, though the latter of the four is extremely rare.</p>
<p>One such helpful item that some advanced practitioner&#8217;s even use is that of the Yoga bolster. A bolster is a cotton-filled cushion that comes in a variety of sizes and shapes. It is generally either round or square, round being the most common. The purpose of the bolster is diverse. However, it is mostly utilized as a cushion for the head, neck, or lower back. When considering the human posture, the head is the least likely use.</p>
<p>When performing Yoga, the practitioner generally does so on a hard surface, such as a hardwood floor, linoleum, or similar unyielding surface. It does not denote weakness to utilize cushions to make it less painful. The words Yoga and pain were never meant to be interrelated in any way.</p>
<p>When deciding upon the best type of Bolster for you, the best tactic to utilize is a simple one. Just lie down flat on whatever surface that you will be practicing Yoga on. Lie there until you start to relax. Let your body naturally sink into the floor. Now, take close note of what part of your body is not touching the bare floor once you are totally within a state of relaxation. This is your body taking its natural form. Wherever these points are that aren&#8217;t in contact with the floor is where you will get the most benefit from a bolster.</p>
<p>As for where to get a bolster, you can do a simple internet search of the words &#8220;Yoga Bolster&#8221; and you will literally find hundreds of thousands of results. One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a bolster is that you generally get what you pay for. If you purchase the cheap generic brand, you will get cheap and generic results. It is best to pay a little more for something that will last longer and be more effective.</p>
<p>Another thing to be wary of are Yoga bolsters that are filled with anything but real cotton. Other fillers that are often used instead will eventually begin to lose their shape and become virtually useless.</p>

<p>What can children and parents gain from practicing Yoga together?  When should I start teaching Yoga to my son or daughter?  What about Mommy and Me classes?  Let&#8217;s cover a bit of ground, and establish some realistic expectation for parents and children.</p>
<p>What can children and parents gain from practicing Yoga together?  &#8220;The sky is the limit,&#8221; as they say.  Children<span id="more-300"></span> and parents need more bonding time.  We need to eat together and find activities that solidify our relationships.  Mommy and Me Yoga classes offer a chance for families to bond, while children are impressionable.</p>
<p>Like any activity, Yoga can be practiced at an early age.  As long as Yoga practice is supervised, and the teacher is knowledgeable, parent and child will benefit in many ways.  Parents who have no knowledge of Yoga should consider toddler classes or the Mommy and Me Yoga classes.</p>
<p>Classes should be divided according to age.  For example &#8211; Children who are one to two years of age could be separated from the two to four years of age group.  Below twelve months of age, most children are in the watching stage.</p>
<p>Some babies will copy what they see, and you should never expect too much from any child.  Children will learn Yoga much better in a patient environment.  There should not be a deadline for the time it takes a child to learn aspects of Yoga.  Children have a lifetime to learn the many benefits of Yoga.  Surprisingly, most children of all ages will demonstrate Yoga techniques they learn at home.</p>
<p>When should I start teaching Yoga to my son or daughter Yoga?  Any time is fine, as long as you make it fun.  For parents, this is the beginning of learning how to guide without discouraging.  Yoga will teach children life skills, such as stress reduction, anger management, goal setting, and enhance athletic ability.</p>
<p>What about Mommy and Me classes?  If you have a Mommy and Me Yoga class in your area, it is worth signing up.  Parents should let the Yoga instructor lead the class.  This seems obvious, but you would be surprised how often parents can be counter productive to children&#8217;s activities.</p>
<p>Mommy and Me Yoga classes will contain many of the following aspects: Yoga music, kids music, singing, basic Pranayama, coloring books, theme Yoga classes, Asanas, mixing dance movement with Yoga, drawing with crayons, story telling, Yoga games, focusing drills, relaxation techniques, meditation, and lots of fun.</p>
<p>There are many Yoga books, DVD&#8217;s, card decks, coloring books, and Yoga music CD&#8217;s for children.  With so much to choose from, a child&#8217;s attention can be harnessed for constructive purposes.  The greatest benefit of all for children is the ability to control their own attention span.</p>

<p>4)Yoga, being a physical breathing exercise, promotes good blood circulation. As a result, one&#8217;s menstrual cycle will not be a problem anymore, thus minimizing pain. </p>

<p>Unlike other physical exercises, yoga is not too exacting on one&#8217;s health. One may do yoga as often as she wishes. However, the key factor to consider here is to perform yoga regularly. This will allow the body to reap the maximum benefits of yoga. </p>
